DUSHANBE, July 21, 2014, Asia-Plus — Some 6,000 people have reportedly joined the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s organization in Sughd over the first six months of this year.

According to the executive committee of PDP’s organization in Sughd, more than 3,000 of those who have joined the party in January-June this year are women.

“PDP’s organization in Sughd now has some 70,000 members,” a source at the executive committee of PDP’s organization in Sughd told Asia-Plus in an interview.  

Founded in 1993, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting more than 240,000 registered members.  President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party. The PDP now controls more than 60 percent of the seats in parliament.
