DUSHANBE, September 10, 2014, Asia-Plus – Two representatives of Tajikistan will monitor elections to Kazakhstan’s upper house (Senate) of parliament.
“Mr. Ziyo Rahmon, the member of Tajikistan’s Center Commission for Referenda and Elections (CCER) and Mr. Daler Safarov, the leading specialist with the CCER will monitor elections to Kazakhstan’s Senate,” Mr. Abdumannon Dodoyev, the head of the CCER’s office told Asia-Plus in an interview. According to him, they were included to the CSI election observation mission.
Elections to Kazakhstan’s upper chamber of parliament are scheduled for October 1, 2014.
The election is held when the constitutional term of office of Senate members is expired. The last elections to Kazakhstan’s Senate took place in 2011.
Kazakhstan’s legislature, known as the Parliament (Parlamenti), has two chambers.
The Assembly (Mazhilis) has 107 seats, elected for a five-year term, 98 elected in general elections by proportional representation with 7% threshold and 9 elected by the Assembly of Kazakhstani Nation.
The Senate of Kazakhastan is the upper house of two chambers in Kazakhstan”s legislature, The Senate has 47 members, 40 of whom are elected to six-year terms in double-seat constituencies by the local assemblies, half renewed every two years, and 7 presidential appointees. In addition, ex-presidents are ex officio senators for life.
Eighty-eight candidates have reportedly been nominated to run in this year’s elections to Kazakhstan’s upper house of parliament.
