DUSHANBE, September 12, 2014, Asia-Plus — Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met here with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in the morning of September 12 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between their countries.

They, in particular, discussed issues related to strengthening of transit potential of the two countries in the fields of energy and freight traffic.

On the current situation in Afghanistan, Tajik leader reportedly noted that creation of national unity in Afghanistan would serve interests of the Afghan people and the region as a whole.

The sides expressed confidence that experience of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in providing peace and stability on the countries’ common border will be in demand in the future as well, the source said.

Afghanistan has observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as do Pakistan, Iran, India and Mongolia.  Afghanistan acquired the observer status in the SCO in 2012.
