DUSHANBE, September 24, 2014, Asia-Plus — Certain problems existing in bilateral relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan can be and should be solved by joint efforts of the two countries.

Kyrgyz Ambassador to Tajikistan Miroslav Niyazov made this remark at a roundtable in Dushanbe on September 24.

“We have border, water and land use, as well as transportation problems.  But all these problems could be solved because there is political will of the leaders of the two countries, political will of ministries and agencies to solve these problems,” Niyazov said.

“We just have to learn to compromise,” Kyrgyz diplomat said, noting that the last meeting of the presidents of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan that took place in Dushanbe this month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit had given a new impulse to further development of bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to him, the SCO is a serious organization that has a great future.

The roundtable meeting was dedicated to the results of Tajikistan’s rotating chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

We will recall that this year, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have been locked in a tense border disputed for months around Vorukh, which is part of Tajikistan, but due to past redrawing of borders, it exists as an exclave some 20 kilometers inside Kyrgyzstan.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan held border talks in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on August 26, a day after a shooting left two Tajiks dead and five injured.  The talks reportedly focused on the 46 percent of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border that needs to be demarcated.

Besides, border guard officials from the two countries held separate talks in Kyrgyzstan”s Batken region and adjacent Tajik territory.

Shooting incidents along the border earlier this year injured several Kyrgyz and Tajik border guards.
