DUSHANBE, October 13, 2014, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has reminded his CIS counterparts of their promise to help Tajikistan strengthen its common border with Afghanistan.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, Emomali Rahmon made this remark on October 10 while addressing a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Minsk, Belarus.

Speaking at the summit, Tajik president reportedly drew attention of the CIS leaders to the current situation in Afghanistan.

Tajik leader pointed to the necessity of implementation of the CIS leaders’ resolution regarding providing technical assistance for strengthening of the Tajik-Afghan border.

Rahmon also drew attention of those present to increasing threat of terrorism and extremism and called on the CIS leaders to expand cooperation on the mentioned directions, the website said.

The summit was reportedly attended by 10 of the member states” presidents while Ukraine — deeply at odds with Russia over Moscow”s annexation of Crimea and a conflict with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine — was represented by its ambassador to Belarus. 

We will recall that a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) foreign ministers, defense ministers, and security council secretaries that took place in the Russian city of Sochi on September 23, 2013 adopted a statement, in which the — which includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan — agreed to draw up a joint plan to protect Tajikistan”s common border with Afghanistan.
