Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan reportedly agree to intensify work on solving border problems

Date:

DUSHANBE, November 17, 2014, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have reportedly agreed to intensify work on solving border problems.

Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda paid an official visit to Kyrgyzstan from November 14-15 at the invitation of his Kyrgyz counterpart Djoomart Otorbayev, Subhiddin Muhiddinov, a senior consultant to the president’s press center, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, the sides discussed bilateral cooperation between their countries in various fields, including energy, transportation and construction.

“A special attention was paid to the border delineation problems and the sides agreed to intensify work on solving border problems,” Muhiddinov said.

Rasoulzoda and Otorbayev reportedly also exchanged views on rational use of water resources in the region, implementation of regional transportation and energy projects, including Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA 1000), etc.

The meeting ended with signing of a joint communiqué.

While in Bishkek, Tajik prime minister also held talks with Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev and Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Asilbek Zheenbekov, Muhiddinov said, noting that similar issues were discussed during those meetings.

Nearly half of the 970-kilometer Kyrgyz-Tajik border remains legally undefined.  This year, the two countries have been locked in a tense border dispute for months around Vorukh, which is part of Tajikistan, but due to past redrawing of borders, it exists as an exclave some 20 kilometers inside Kyrgyzstan.
