President announces March 1 date for parliamentary elections

DUSHANBE, December 5, 2014, Asia-Plus — On Friday December 5, President Emomali Rahmon signed a decree on holding the next election of deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) and members of the legislatures of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), provinces and Dushanbe City, cities and districts on March 1, 2015.

Election of members of Tajikistan’s upper house (Majlisi Milli) will be held on March 27, 2015, the source added.

Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli).  Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation and 41 in single-seat constituencies.  Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local majlis members and eight appointed by the president.
