DUSHANBE, December 23, 2014, Asia-Plus – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) may resume lending to Tajikistan starting next year, ADB’s Country Director for Tajikistan, Mr. C.C. Yu, announced at a briefing in Dushanbe on December 23.

“The Asian Development Bank has provided only grants to Tajikistan in recent years.  The situation may change in 2015,” Mr. C.C. Yu noted.

According to him, the decision on this issue will be made later on the basis of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) external debt sustainability analysis (DSA).

“If Tajikistan’s risk of external debt distress is assessed as moderate, there is probability that grants and concessional loans will be provided to Tajikistan in equal volumes,” ADB’s country director noted.

Since 2008, the Asian Development Bank has provided only grants to Tajikistan.

Tajikistan joined ADB in 1998 and, to date, ADB has approved total assistance of around $1.3 billion in concessional loans, grants, and technical assistance to the country.  The ADB-Tajikistan partnership has promoted social development, upgraded and built new infrastructure, expanded agricultural production, and encouraged regional cooperation and trade under the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program.
