DUSHANBE, January 12, 2015, Asia-Plus — A number of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP)’s organizations yesterday held conferences to nominated their activists to run for seats in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) in five single-mandate constituencies.
“A joint conference of the IRP’s organizations for Fayzobod, Nourobod and Vahdat has nominated Rahmatullo Rajab, who heads the IRP’s organization in Fayzobod,” Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmon, a spokesman for the IRP, told Asia-Plus in an interview. He will run for election in the Fayzobod single-mandate constituency.
The IRP’s organization in Dushanbe’s Firdvasi district has reportedly nominated Ms. Zarafo Khojayeva, who is adviser to the IRP leader for legal issues.
The IRP’s organization in the northern city of Isfara has nominated Mr. Numon Sahripov, a power engineering specialist.
The IRP’s organization in the northern city of Panjaknt has nominated a pensioner Qavi Fayziyev.
A joint conference of the IRP’s organizations for Vakhsh, Bokhtar and Rumi has nominated Qiyomiddin Avzalov. He will run for election in the Vakhsh single-mandate constituency.
Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli). Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation and 41 in single-seat constituencies. Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local legislature (majlis) members and eight appointed by the president.
