DUSHANBE, January 15, 2015, Asia-Plus — The number of disasters has decreased while the number of disaster victims has increased in Tajikistan.

“67 natural disasters we registered in the country last year, which was 16 cases fewer than in 2013,” Rustam Shoyev, the deputy head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of Tajikistan (CES), announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 15.

“Meanwhile the number of disaster victims increased from 11 in 2013 to 31 in 2014,” Tajik emergency official said.

“Of 67 disasters registered last year, 29 caused the most damage to the country’s economy, which was estimated at 41.504 million somoni, while the damage caused to the country’s economy by 83 disasters registered in 2013 was estimated at 63,950,800 somoni,” Shoyev added.
