DUSHANBE, January 27, 2015, Asia-Plus — The Islamic Revival Party (IRP) Political Council that met in Dushanbe yesterday has reportedly decided to file a complaint in the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) against the Islamic Center head Saidmukarram Abdulgodirzoda (Tajikistan’s grand mufti).

Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmonov, a spokesman for the IRP, says the IRP Political Council has expressed concern over unfounded attacks made by some clerics, including the Islamic Center head, against the Islamic Revival Party.

“The meeting participants have decided to file a complaint against Saidmukarram Abdulgodirzoda in the central electoral commission,” said Fayzrahmonov, “In case of recurrence of such actions, the IRP Political Council will file a lawsuit in a court.”

The IRP Political Council also heard a report of the IRP central election campaign staff, Fayzrahmonov added.

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.  The IRP was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is Najot (Salvation).  According to some source, the IRP now has some 50,000 members.  Women reportedly constitute more than 51 percent of the Islamic Revival Party members.
