DUSHANBE, February 4, 2015, Asia-Plus — FAO today launched a project to support the formulation of the national legislation on organic agriculture in Tajikistan
The FAO CO in Tajikistan says FAO partners – representatives of ministries and Government agencies, international and non-governmental organizations were invited to participate in the inception workshop to launch the project. Besides presentation on objectives and expected outputs of the project, the participants were also familiarized with a brief history, importance and further development of organic agriculture in Tajikistan.
It is obvious that development of organic production significantly impacts to increase the value added production, to improve livelihood and food security of rural population. With this goal, the Law on Biologic Farming and Production was adopted by the Government of Tajikistan on 22 July 2013. The law aims to regulate the production, processing, storage, transportation, packaging, labeling and sale of biological products.
“Nowadays the worldwide market of organic production is increasing. In view of natural conditions of Tajikistan and its development in recent years, I would like to highlight Tajikistan’s huge potential in this field. In this regard, FAO will provide to the Government of Tajikistan a technical assistance in development of the national regulatory and institutional framework on organic agriculture. Consequently, the development of certified organic production will contribute to the production of environmentally safe products and increase Tajik farmers” income,” – said Viorel Gutu, FAO Representative in Tajikistan.
The project reportedly targets to assist in reviewing the legislation, draft regulations and develop proposals for institutional development.
