QURGHON TEPPA, February 23, 2015, Asia-Plus — 154 contenders, including 29 women, will compete for 61 seats in the Khatlon regional legislature (Majlis).

An official source at the regional electoral commissions says 143 candidates have been nominated by political parties and 11 others are self-propelled candidates.

According to him, five political parties will compete for seats in the Khatlon regional legislature.

“The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDR) has nominated 110 candidates, the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) – 13 candidates; the Agrarian Party (APT) – 9 candidates, the Party of Economic Reforms (PER) – 7 candidates, and the Communist Party (CPT) – 4 candidates,” the source said, noting that the Social-Democratic, Socialist and Democratic parties  have not nominated their candidates for the regional legislature.

The candidates running for election to the Khatlon regional legislature include Khalton governor, his four deputies and 23 heads of districts ad cities, the source added.
