DUSHANBE, March 19, 2015, Asia-Plus — Complicated global political situation, instable economic situation in countries that are major trading partners of Tajikistan and unsettled prices for the main items of Tajikistan’s exports have led to the exchange rate pressure and economic slowdown in Tajikistan, according to the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT).

“As a result, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the first two months of this year has stood at 4.8 billion somoni and GDO growth rate in January-February this year has fallen by 1.9 percent compared to the same period in 2014 – from 7.1 percent to 5.2 percent,” an official source at Tajik central bank told Asia-Plus in an interview.

Over the same two-month period, the external trade turnover of Tajikistan has reportedly amounted to 615.4 million U.S. dollars, which was 84.2 percent of the January-February 2014 level.

In January-February 2015, the trade balance has been negative and amounted to 316.6 million U.S. dollars.

Exports of goods over the first two months of this year have amounted to 149.4 million U.S. dollars, which was 11.6 percent fewer than in the same period last year.

Over the report period, imports of goods into the country have amounted to 466 million U.S. dollars, which was 22 percent fewer than in January-February 2014.

Over the same-two month period, Tajikistan’s trade with CIS nations has reportedly declined by 21.5 percent and the country’s trade with non-CIS countries has declined by 9.9 percent.
