DUSHANBE, April 1, 2015, Asia-Plus — Prices for mobile phone services have risen in Tajikistan.

Companies offering cellular communication service in Tajikistan note that the coming of the law on amendments to the country’s tax code has led to the increase in the rate of excise tax on mobile phone services from 3.0 to 5.0 percent.

Taking into account the increase in the rate of excise tax on mobile phone services, cellular operators Tcell, Beeline and Megafon-Tajikistan have noted on their websites that they raise prices for mobile phone services by 2.0 percent beginning on April 1, 2015.

We will recall that the law on a 3-percent excise tax on mobile phone services came into force in Tajikistan on January 1, 2011.

Speaking at the parliament session, Finance Minister Safarali Najmiddinov said on November 25, 2010 that the new excise tax on mobile services will let Tajikistan”s state budget receive additional 30 million somoni ($6.8 million) a year that will be spent on the development of the social sector.

Mobile phone users will not be greatly impacted by the new law, Najmiddinov said.  “The annual income of all mobile providers in the country makes USD409 million and operators will pay additional tax at the expense of their incomes,” he added.

Last year, Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament endorsed amendments to the country’s tax code under which the rate of excise tax on mobile phone services increases from 3.0 to 5.0 percent.

According to the latest data, there are 10 million mobile subscribers in Tajikistan with population of 8 million; almost 6 million of them are active subscribers.
