Tajik chief prosecutor’s office about factors influencing exchange rates

Date:

DUSHANBE, April 20, 2015, Asia-Plus – A statement released by the Prosecutor-General’s Office on April 20, in particular, notes that 192 cases of violation of the country’s law regulation the foreign currency circulation have been revealed in the country in recent days.

Alongside objective factors influencing exchange rates in Tajikistan such as global financial and economic crisis there are also subjective factors such as selling and buying of properties in domestic market in dollars, illegal foreign-currency outflows, and unscrupulousness of some currency-exchange point owners, the statement says.

According to the statement, some currency-exchange points now buy dollars at the rate of 1:6.50 and sell them at the rate of 1:6.50 though the buying rate of the dollar against the somoni (the buying rate is the rate at which money dealers buy foreign currency) was set by the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) at 1:6.28 and the selling rate (the rate at which money dealers sell the currency) was set by the NBT at 1:6:30.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against violators of the law regulating the foreign currency circulation in Tajikistan, the statement says.

We will recall that Tajik central Bank suspended  operations of currency-exchange points belonging to physical entities in the country on April 17.

Meanwhile, the value of the somoni (TJS) has continued to depreciate against USD over the past week, registering an average market buying rate of the dollar against the somoni (the buying rate is the rate at which money dealers buy foreign currency) 1:6.33 on April 17, up from 1: 6.2675 on April 10.

On April 17, the market buying rate of the dollar against the somoni in Dushanbe, Khujand, Kulob and Qurghon Teppa was 1:6.33.  In Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), the market buying rate of the dollar against the somoni on April 17 was 1:6.25.
