was an opening ceremony of
renovated gym of School for the visually impaired and blind children in Dushanbe.
Renovation was sponsored by donations. Volunteers and Flex Alumni helped in renovation.
As said to “AP” – project leader Dilafruz Sharifbaeva, the school gym was in bad condition, walls were collapsed, and ceiling fell off. In addition, the gym did not have any sports equipment.
According to the director of the school Gulsihat Zikrulloeva, a school founded in 2008. Children from 7 to 12 years old attend the school. There are 104 children in school, 33 of them are girls, and 71 are boys. From total amount of kids 40 of which are blind, the rest of the 64 are visually impaired.
– Gym was unusable and was simply closed. To repair the gym was too costly affair for us. But to help to renovate gym came volunteers. Volunteers rubbed walls, patched all the cracks and fully painted the gym. Renovation work lasted three days. They helped us a lot. We did not expect such results and were very surprised and grateful at the same time – said the director of the school.
G.Zikrulloeva highlighted that, besides renovation, volunteers gave to schools sports equipment: educational games, balls, hoops, skipping ropes, mats and many others.
According D.Sharifbaeva -this project was funded by the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD).
She added that «Global Youth Service Day» – an international call for young activists around the world to team up and volunteer to carry out various actions in the period April 17-19, in their countries, cities and towns. Taking into account that it’s not only the call, but also a desire to contribute to the development of our country. And FLEX alumni and volunteers enthusiastically contributed their efforts to our community.
In addition, information about this activity was posted in the Tajik segment of Facebook, Group «Tajik Mama» and «Economic News TJ», and Instagram. The call for help responded kind and helpful Tajiks living both in the country and abroad. Moreover, the US Ambassador in Tajikistan Susan Elliott repeatedly visited and helped in renovation too.
