DUSHABE, June 26, 2015, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan is marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today.
On this occasion, the Drug Control Agency under the President of Tajikistan (DCA) has reportedly organized a number of activities involving all segments of the population.
According to the DCA press center, various cultural and sports activities were organized in all regions of the country from June 16 to June 26.
Besides, a series of meeting were organized to discuss issues of anti-drug education in preschool and educational institutions.
All these events have been carried out within the frameworks of Tajikistan’s National Strategy on Combating Illicit Drugs, 2013-2020.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1988, a date chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu”s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, just before the First Opium War in China.
The observance was instituted by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987. The General Assembly recognized that despite continued and increased efforts by the international community, the world drug problem continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, the safety and well-being of humanity, in particular young people, and the national security and sovereignty of States, and that it undermines socio-economic and political stability and sustainable development. It encouraged the Commission and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to continue their work on international drug control and urged all Governments to provide the fullest possible financial and political support to enable UNODC to continue, expand and strengthen its operational and technical cooperation activities, within its mandates.
The 2015 theme is: “Lets Develop — Our Lives — Our Communities — Our Identities — Without Drugs.”
