Donors reduce aid to the agricultural and irrigation sectors of Tajikistan

Date:

Dushanbe. 8 September. “Asia Plus” — In recent years observes the declining tendency in external assistance to agricultural and irrigation sector in Tajikistan, said the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan.

According to the source, in 2015 the commitments from development partners to provide assistance to this sector amounted to $ 37.1 million, which is about 21% less of total liabilities of 2014. Last year, foreign donors have pledged to give more than $46.7 million for this sector of the republic, but the actual amount of aid for the year amounted to just over $ 36.4 million.

Moreover, the volume of foreign aid next year could fall by more than two times compared to the volume of exerted assistance in 2014 – up to $17 million.

“Reduces both the grant component of foreign aid and the part of credit, – said the source. – The grant aid is much higher than support in the form of loans. So, in 2014 the volume of grants was almost five times higher than the volume of loans”.

According to the State Committee on Investments, last year a relatively big help to agriculture and irrigation sectors was provided by the World Bank of Tajikistan (more than $10 million), that accounted 11.3% of the total aid sector. Next comes the UK Department for International Development ($ 4.1 mln.), Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development ($ 3.1 mln.), The Islamic Development Bank ($ 2.7 mln.), Government of Germany (about $ 2.4 million.), Asian Development Bank ($ 2.1 mln.).
