DUSHANBE, October 14, 2015, Asia-Plus – Parliamentarians from 28 countries, including delegations from Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, attended the 11th General Assembly of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) that took place in Bangkok, Thailand on October 10-11 this year.
According to AFPPD-Central Asia, Tajikistan was elected to chair the AFPPD Youth Committee. Nepal was reportedly determined as the co-chair country.
The Central Asian region is represented by Aytkul Samakova (Kazakhstan), Svetlana Ferkho (Kazakhstan), Yelena Tarasenko (Kazakhstan), Daniyar Terbishaliyev (Kyrgyzstan), and Gulbahor Ashourova (Tajikistan).
The Committee on Social, Family and Healthcare Issues of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) became a member of the Asian Forum in 2001 as a result of the joint effort between the AFPPD and the members of the Parliament of Tajikistan.
The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) is a coordinating body of National Committees of Parliamentarians on Population and Development and Parliamentary Committees dealing with population and development issues working to generate support and perpetuate cooperation among Asian parliamentarians in the area of population and development, and related fields. The Asian Forum is committed to informing, educating and motivating parliamentarians on the linkages between increasing population and issues such as reproductive health, family planning, food security, water resources, sustainable development, environment, ageing, urbanization, migration, HIV/AIDS, and gender equality.
