Three-day international conference “Seismic safety of the countries of Central Asia” starts in the capital of Tajikistan on 25

of August.

It is expected that the conference will bring together scientists and experts in the field of seismology and earthquake engineering of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, USA, India, Pakistan, Iran and China. The representatives of international organizations – the World Bank, the UN, the Swiss cooperation office etc. were also invited, states the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.

“The consequences of the earthquake that occurred in recent years in the countries of Central Asia have once again pointed out the necessity of uniting the efforts of scientists, experts and international organizations that are operating in the field of studying of earthquakes and reduce the risk from them,” – stated in the message.

It is noted that during the conference there will be held an open dialogue between scientists and members of the public on issues of seismic safety in the countries of Central Asia. The participants also will share achievements and new technologies. In addition, there will be discussed the issues of attracting international donors in order to solute the existing problems of seismic safety.

During the conference will be also considered the prospects of creating a unified system of seismological observations in Central Asia.

One of the important themes of the event is “the Security of cascades of hydroelectric power stations in mountain regions”. The conference participants will discuss the experience of building large dams and creating large reservoirs, evaluation of seismic safety of high dams, and the use of seismic monitoring systems for monitoring the condition of dams and reservoirs.
