JICA supports enhancement of Tajikistan’s energy sector by improving substations in Dushanbe

Date:

On June 30, 2017, a grant agreement for “the Project for Improvement of Substations in Dushanbe" was signed between Tajikistan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the amount of 2,190 million Japanese Yen (about 20 million US dollars), JICA Tajikistan Office reported on July 3.

The document was reportedly inked by the Minister of Finance of Tajikistan, Mr. Abdusalom Qurboniyon and JICA Chief Representative in Tajikistan, Mr. Hideki Tanabe.

The project will be implemented by OJSHC Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company) under supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan.

The objective of the Project is to improve sustainability of stable and efficient power supply in Dushanbe city through rehabilitation of Promishlennaya substation and construction of new Radiostansiya substation, thereby contributing to social and economic development of the Republic of Tajikistan.

It is worth noting that most of the substations located in Dushanbe city were built during the Soviet Union Era and the installed equipment are already served until their life time.  Implementation of this project will provide reliable supply of electricity to the widespread areas of Dushanbe city and will increase the industrial and commercial potential of this area.

It is also worth that this project is the very first project supported by JICA in energy sector.  JICA will continue to support to enhance Tajikistan’s energy sector.

JICA began its technical cooperation with Tajikistan in 1993 by inviting Tajik officials to gain knowledge and experience on governance and macroeconomics development.  At the end of March 2016, the total number of participants to JICA’s Knowledge Co-Creation Programs, formerly called the Training Programs, has exceeded 2000 people. JICA Office was established in 2006, and since then various Grant Financial Assistance and Technical Cooperation projects have been implemented more dynamically, aiming at improving living standard of Tajik people for the sectors such as agriculture and rural development, water supply, health, transport, energy, capacity building etc. JICA’s cumulative investment in all sectors reportedly amounted as 82.06 million USD Technical Cooperation and 255.15 million USD for Grant Assistance with 31 (on-going and implemented) projects.
