Date:

The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) has introduced into circulation coins in denomination of 1, 3 and 3 somoni, the NBT first deputy head, Jamoliddin Nouraliyev, told reporters in Dushanbe on July 24.

According to him, banknotes in denomination of 1, 3 and 5 somoni are most in demand, and therefore, they are becoming dilapidated quickly.

“Therefore, we have decided to replace all banknotes in denomination of 1,3 and  somoni with coins of the same denomination,” Nouraliyev noted.

The NBT deputy head noted that 343 million somoni of dilapidated banknotes, including 41.9 million somoni in banknotes of 1 somoni denomination, 10.7 million somoni in banknotes of 3 somoni denomination and 13.7 million somoni in banknotes of 5 somoni denomination, had been immobilized over the first six months of this year.

He further added that Tajikistan’s gross domestic product (GDP) had risen 6.0 percent in six months to July 1, 2017, reaching 24.024 billion somoni.

Tajikistan’s inflation for the same six-month period has reportedly stood at 5.9 percent, 2.8 percent higher than in the same period last year.

Tajikistan’s external trade turnover over the first six months of this year has amounted to 1.6 billion U.S. dollars, which was 37.5 million U.S dollars more than in the same period last year.
