Tajikistan hopes for external aid for solution of its socioeconomic problems

Date:

On Friday May 18, Sharif Rahimzoda, the head of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) Committee on Economics, Finance and Taxes, received visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff mission.

“In the course of the talks, the two sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and International Monetary Fund,” Muhammadato Sultonov a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

Rahimzoda, in particular, noted that the Government of Tajikistan was implementing economic policy under support of international financial institutions.

“We consider the current negotiations a logical continuation of expansion of cooperation between the Government of Tajikistan and the Fund and a factor of extension in the economic transformations in the country,” Rahimzoda was quoted as saying.

Tajik MP expressed confidence that partners for development would play an important role in assisting with solution of Tajikistan’s socioeconomic problems.

Recall, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff mission, led by Ms. Padamja Khandelwal, arrived in Dushanbe on May 12 and will stay here until May 23.  The IMF representatives will also hold talks with top managers of relevant ministries and agencies of Tajikistan to discuss Tajikistan’s recent economic performance, developments in the banking sector, the authorities’ macroeconomic policy framework, and reform plans.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 189 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.

Created in 1945, the IMF is governed by and accountable to the 189 countries that make up its near-global membership.
