Tajikistan has reportedly reduced wheat imports and have significantly increased flour imports.

Over the first ten months of this year, Tajikistan has imported more than 73,000 tons of wheat flour (a 44 percent increase compared to January-October 2019), according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.

The imported wheat flour has reportedly cost Tajik suppliers at 19 million U.S. dollars, which is 52 percent more expensive than in the same period last year.

Over the same ten-month month period, Tajikistan has reportedly imported more than 760,000 tons of wheat, which is 7.8 percent fewer than in January-October last year.

Kazakhstan provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s wheat and flour imports.  Over the reporting period, Kazakhstan has accounted for more than 90 percent of Tajikistan’s flour and wheat imports.

Current Tajikistan’s annual requirements in wheat flour are estimated at some 1 million tons.

The price for grade 1 wheat flour, which is the best-selling flour in Tajikistan, has risen 15 percent in ten months to October 31.

Current average prices for a 50-kilogram sack of grade 1 wheat flour are 235 somonis in Dushanbe, 260 somonis in Tursunzoda, more than 250 somonis in Khorog, Vanj and Rasht, and 220 somonis in Khujand, Isfara and Istarashan.
