According to the statistical data from the Sughd civilian registry office, 10,537 deaths have been reported in Sughd province over the first ten months of this year, which is 1,294 deaths more compared to the same period last year.  

Over the reporting period, an increase in mortality has been observed in 16 cities and regions of the province, the chairperson of the Sughd civilian registry office, Ms. Lolakhon Faizzoda, told Asia-Plus in an interview. 

According to her, “The number of deaths registered in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province, over the first ten months of this year was 233 cases more than in the same period last year,” Faizzoda said.

Khujand is reportedly followed by Bobojon-Ghafourov district, which is the most populate district in northern Tajikistan.  The number of deaths registered in Bobojon-Ghafourov district over the reporting period was reportedly 209 cases more than in the same period last year.  

In Istaravshan, Panjakent and Jabbor-Rasoulov districts, the number of deaths has reportedly increased by 100-200 cases.

Only in the cities of Konibodom and Guliston, the number of deaths has decreased in January-October by 57 and 9 cases, respectively.

Meanwhile, the head of the Sughd health directorate, Mr. Farrukh Maqsoudzoda, told Asia-Plus last week that Panjakent, Istaravshan, Asht and Bobojon-Ghafourov districts have been the most vulnerable to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Local authorities reportedly intend to establish labs for implementation of COVID-19 diagnostic test in these districts before the end of this year.
