Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan national power utility company) continued exporting electricity to neighboring countries last month. Meanwhile, rural areas of Tajikistan currently have electricity only several hours per day.
According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, Tajikistan last month exported some US$2 million worth of electricity to neighboring countries, which was reportedly US$1.6 million fewer compared to October last year.
Barqi Tojik says more than 16.1 billion kWh of electricity have been generated in Tajikistan over the first ten months of this year, which was 5.1 percent fewer compared to the same period last year.
Tajikistan exports electric power to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.
Last year, Tajikistan supplied more than 14 percent of the generated electric power to neighboring countries, according to the Ministry Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR).
In 2019, Tajikistan reportedly supplied about 2.9 billion kWh of electric power to the neighboring countries.
In accordance with the agreement concluded with the neighboring, Tajikistan supplies electricity to the neighboring countries only during the April-October period. Tajikistan has sufficient summer-time (defined as May 1 to September 30) hydropower surpluses to export to the neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, rural areas in Tajikistan itself currently have electricity only several hours per day.
Barqi Tojik, however denies it is implementing a rationing regime, saying only that power is disconnected intermittently because of ongoing repairs at the Nurek hydroelectric station, which provides much of the country’s electricity needs, and sub-stations.
