Ukrainian media reports say the Verkhovna Rada has denounced the agreement between the governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the avoidance of double taxation of income and property and the prevention of tax evasion, as well as three CIS agreements.
Referring to the parliament’s official website, Ukrinform says relevant decisions were made at a parliament meeting on Sunday, May 22.
Ukrinform reports that as stated in the explanatory note to Law No. 0146, the denunciation of the agreement with Russia is aimed at protecting the national interests of Ukraine and the national security of Ukraine.
This decision was reportedly made due to “Russia's military aggression, the creation of Russian occupation administrations in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as violations by Russia of the principles of public international law and current international obligations.”
TASS says Ukraine’s government took a decision to withdraw from this agreement on April 29.
In addition, Ukrainian MPs passed laws No. 0074 on Ukraine's withdrawal from the CIS agreement on the fight against illegal migration, No. 0084 on Ukraine's withdrawal from the CIS agreement on the common agrarian market and No. 0145 on Ukraine's withdrawal from the CIS agreement on perpetuating the memory of the courage and heroism of the CIS peoples in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
In April, Ukraine withdrew from the CIS agreement on the rules for determining the origin of goods from developing countries when granting tariff preferences.
In July last year, Ukraine withdrew proceeds from the agreement on the main directions of cooperation between CIS member nations in the field of consumer protection.
In January 2020, Ukraine in late January 2020 withdrew from the Agreement on Intergovernmental Courier Communication.
On December 16, 2019, the Kiev administration announced a retreat from a series of agreements with the CIS.
Due to tensions with the Russian Federation, Ukraine ended its participation in CIS statutory bodies in 2018.
Ukraine and Turkmenistan did not ratify the Charter of the CIS and Ukraine and Turkmenistan kept participating in the CIS, without being member states of it. Ukraine became an associate member of the CIS Economic Union in April 1994, and Turkmenistan became an associate member of the CIS in August 2005. Georgia left the CIS altogether in 2009 and Ukraine stopped participating in 2018.
