Compared to early December gasoline prices decrease by over 18 percent

DUSHANBE, January 3, Asia-Plus Compared to early December gasoline prices in Tajikistan have decreased by 18.78 percent, according to information from the Ministry of Economy and Trade (MET).

            The MET source has told Asia-Plus that the price of one liter of 96-octane gasoline in Dushanbe has decreased from 2.80 Somonis in early December to 2.40 Somonis, with similar price decrease in other parts of the country.  The price of one liter of 95-octane gasoline has reduced from 2.70 Somonis to 2.20 Somonis, and the price of one liter of 80-octane gasoline from 2.50 Somonis to 1.80 Somonis.  

The MET experts consider that the gasoline supplies situation should improve because ban imposed by

High prices of some food products in Tajikistan remain till mid-January, says local expert

DUSHANBE, January 3, Asia-Plus Prices of some basic food products have increased in Tajikistan by the New Year’s holiday.

             Odina Odinayev, head of the department for monitoring prices within the Ministry of Economy and Trade, has told Asia-Plus that during the New Year’s holidays, prices of some food products such as sausages, noodles, potatoes, rice, onions, apples, pears, grapes, and pomegranates increased by 16.66 percent compared to the same period of 2004.  At the same time, prices of dairy products, mandarins and lemons decreased by 9.8 percent. 

            Prices of other products set by sellers on the Dushanbe markets have remained the same, according to him.  At the same time, the prices of dairy products and other food products will have increased by Id-i Qurbon, which is marked this year on January 10, Odinayev added.

            According to local experts estimates, prices of basic food products are supposed to decrease only during the second half of January.

KULOB, January 3, Asia-Plus – Dead body of a man was found in the area patrolled by Frontier Post # 8 of Unit 2133 of

’s Border Protection Committee (BPC) late Friday [December 30].

   According to information from the Kulob police directorate, the body was identified as Gholibjon Nazriyev, resident of the Village of Chubek in the border area of Hamadoni District of Khatlon Province.  The source has told Asia-Plus that Gholibjon already had conviction and the law enforcement officers do not rule out the possibility that he had contacts with drug traffickers.  

An operational group comprising representatives from the local police and military prosecutor’s office has been set up to investigate into the matter.

United States provides US$3 million to assist Tajik border guards

, January 3, Asia-Plus – On January 2, the United States began a $3 million airlift of winter supplies and equipment to assist the Tajik Border Guards.  Food, winter clothing, medical supplies, tents, and other needed supplies will be delivered over the new few weeks.

Three killed in fire in Dushanbe in New Year’s night

, January 3, Asia-Plus – One woman and two her children were killed on the night of December 31 – January 1 as fire broke out in their apartment, according to information from the Tajik Fire Brigade.  

According to the fire brigade press service, the tragedy took place in Ispechak-2 microrayon of the

district of Sino.  “The apartment and all their holders belongings were burnt in this fire completely,” the source said, noting that according to preliminary investigation the cause of the fire was alight cigarette-stub.   

The source has also noted that six fires were reported in residential buildings in

on the night of December 31 – January 1.  The main cause of these fires was careless treatment of fire.  

Over 21.5 kilograms of drugs intercepted by police in Tajikistan last week

, January 3, Asia-Plus – Last week, officers of the Tajik Ministry of Interior intercepted 21.503 kilograms of drugs in

According to the Interior Ministry press service, the totaled included 2.48 kilograms of heroin, 17.71 kilograms of marijuana and 1.60 kilograms of raw opium. 

Khudoinazar Asoyev, chief spokesman for the interior ministry, says 6 drug-trafficking-related crimes were solved last week and criminal proceedings were instituted against six persons detained on suspicion of having been involved drug trafficking.  

Tajik Ambassador Mirzoyev calls for Tajik-Iranian cooperation on international issues

, January 3, Asia-Plus – Tajik Ambassador to Tehran Ramazon Mirzoyev said on Saturday [December 31] that visit of Tajik parliamentary delegation to

was positive and that Iran-Tajikistan cooperation on the international issues is expected to expand in 2006, IRNA reported.

He told IRNA that the visit of the speaker of Tajikistan’s lower chamber (Majlisi Namoyandagon) Saydullo Khairulloyev and his entourage to Iran was fruitful for both sides.  “The parliamentarians accompanying Khairulloyev during the tour, referred to it as the most beneficial visit to Iran in 2005 aiming to strengthen mutual ties.  “Their meetings with their Iranian officials and counterparts paved the way for further cooperation and growing trend in relations between the two Persian speaking countries,” he added.  The diplomat noted that during the visit, representatives from the Tajik lower chamber of parliament got closely acquainted with the scientific, cultural, economic and political achievements of Iran as well as Majlis, the judicial branch of government and advanced legislation procedure.

Turning to the remarks of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at his meeting with the Tajik parliamentary delegation as saying, “Tajiks and Iranians are born from the same mother”, he said that the outlook of Iranian president is quite precious to Tajik people.  “In fact, the common culture and language of the two Persian-speaking countries account for preventing any world power from disrupting the growing process of relations between the two nations.

“In addition to presenting economic and cultural assistance to Tajik people and constructing Anzob Tunnel in Tajikistan, Iran will start construction of the Sangtuda hydropower plant and a tunnel in the provincial town,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mirzoyev pointed to the tour of the Tajik delegation to the historical monuments of Isfahan and Shiraz as a precious experience.

Saydullo Khairulloyev left Tehran for Dushanbe on December 30.  Khairulloyev was officially seen off at Tehran Mehrabad International Airport by Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel who said Tehran and Dushanbe enjoyed significant relations as the two capitals have lots of cultural common points.

While in Tehran, the Tajik official met with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in addition to his Iranian counterpart Haddad Adel.  Khairulloyev arrived in Tehran on December 24 heading a high-ranking parliamentary delegation upon an official invitation from former Iranian Majlis speaker Mehdi Karroubi.

Speaking to reporters before his departure, the Tajik official said that he held positive talks with Iranian officials on bilateral cooperation on various cultural and parliamentary fields.  He also expressed hope that Tehran-Dushanbe parliamentary relations would be further promoted in the near future.

Rahmonov to hold republican conference on education issues next week

, December 14, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov is supposed to presided of republican session on December 20.  The session is aiming to consider issues related to a state of the educational sector in the republic.  

Zamon Alifbekov, Aide to the Education Minister, has told Asia-Plus that the session participants include senior representatives from education departments of cities and districts from all the regions of the republic, as well as relevant ministries, committees and organizations. 

President Rahmonov is expected to deliver a statement at the session on state of the educational sector and measures to improve a system of education in the country.  The Minister of Education, Abdujabbor Rahmonov, will give paper on the results of work carried out by his ministry over this year, Mr. Alifbekov said.

Heads of regions, cities and districts will also be asked about work carried out to enhance the educational sector.     

Kulob medical examination and certification directorate burns some 500 kilograms of uncertified medicines

KULOB, December 14, Asia-Plus On Tuesday December 13, employees of the Kulob directorate of the agency for medical examination and certification burned some 500 kilograms of uncertified medicines being injurious to health.  

The head of the Kulob medical examination and certification directorate, Nabijon Shamolov, has told Asia-Plus that all burnt medicines and medicinal preparations were overdue, forged or did not meet requirements of state standard.    

“Since the beginning of the year, we have checked quality of 1004 designations of medicines realized in the chemist’s shops in the city, and only 905 of them have been found fit for taking,” Mr. Shamolov said, adding that 11 others have been found to be forged and the remaining have been overdue. 

Taking into the account that practically all medicines and medicinal preparations are imported to the republic, the Kulob medical examination and certification directorate head pointed to the necessity of tightening control  over medicines imported to the country.  

Nabijon Shamolov also noted that at present they were working on creation of appropriate conditions in 89 chemist’s shops functioning in the Kulob region for preparing and stockpiling medicinal preparations.  “Since the beginning of the year, we have given licenses to 70 chemist’s shops in region that have been found fit for working,” Mr. Shamolov concluded.  

New building of German embassy in Dushanbe supposed to be finished in 2007

DUSHANBE, December 14, Asia-Plus The construction of a new building of the German Embassy in Dushanbe will start in early 2006, German Ambassador to Tajikistan Hans Ulrich Seidt told journalists at the photo exposition entitled “From Design to Architect Building: 50 Designs of New Berlin” in Dushanbe on December 13.  

The exposition opened on December 5 and runs through December 20.

According to the German Ambassador, preparatory works to clear the site for embassy will start already in January 2006.  The new German Embassy will be located in the area near the Russian Embassy in Dushanbe.  The architect will be from Germany, but the construction works will be carried out in cooperation with local specialists. 

The new building of the German Embassy in Dushanbe is supposed to be finished already in 2007.
