Central Electoral and Referendums Commission of Turkmenistan held a meeting on October 11, 2008. Preparation and conduction of forthcoming elections of Majilis deputies were the main topic of the meeting”s agenda.
This is the first meeting of the Central Commission after the historical meeting of Halk Maslahaty (People”s Council) where new Constitution that secured guidance for further state development and became an unconditional guarantor of citizens” rights and freedoms was adopted. Changes and amendments in the new Constitution, abolish Halk Maslahaty (People”s Council) and entrusts its powers to the President and Parliament of Turkmenistan. Now a new legal status of supreme bodies of Turkmenistan is enshrined and a clear line between representative and executive authorities is drawn.
Karryev, the chairman of Central Electoral Commission in the opening speech stressed particular responsibility of CEC members on whose clear and coherent work dependents success of this important socio-political action. This is the first time there will be 125 members elected to the parliament.
