Opposition leader’s son interrogated over journalist’s murder

Kyrgyz police questioned a son of a known opposition leader Alikbek Jekshenkulov over the murder of the journalist Alisher Saipov., the news agency “24.kg” learnt from a source in the Kyrgyz Interior Ministry.

The investigation was reopened due to newly-discovered circumstances. For instance, the police have discovered that Saipov was shot with the same Makarov gun, which was seized from a group of young people, led by Bekkul Jekshenkulov – son of a known opposition activist.

Bekkul Jekshenkulov drew the police’s attention after an incident in the XO bowling center when a fight broke out between the two groups, one of which was headed by the oppositionist’s son. “Jekshenkulov took active part in the conflict and that very gun was involved there,’ the Deputy Minister of Interior Affairs, Dmitry Fedorov, said.

“We do not consider either involvement of the Uzbek special forces in this case, nor a political ground or criminal shoot-out. However, regardless the number of motives, we cannot say that the journalist’s murder was caused by his professional or political insights,” Fedorov said.
