Compulsary army duty may be replaced with 12,000 soms

Those unwilling to serve their compulsary duty in the Kyrgyz army may avoid it by paying a 12,000 soms fee to the Defense Ministry and receive a military ticket within a month. Such a knowhow was introduced in parliament Monday in course of discussion of a new Bill On general military duty, mandatory and alternative services, raised by the social-democratic fraction.

The Minister of Defense Bakytbek Kalyev specified that the new draft bill offers establishing of anew military institution – a mobile reserve. “Those who for some reason cannot be called for duty (students, post-graduate students, workers), and those simply unwilling to do so are allowed to make a contribution at 12,000 soms to the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry’s special fund,” the minister said.

The contribution gives men an opportunity to attend a training center for 1 month and earn a military ticket. The alternative duty servicemen also may use this opportunity.

The contributed funds will reportedly go for food and clothes provision of the training center’s recruits, their medical and transport expenses and terminal wage (KGS 8,000) for the conscripts.

The new draft bill also contains such innovations as alternative service term extension up to 36 months and benefits for those willing to remain contract servicemen after the compulsary term.
