Turkey and Turkmenistan plan joint expedition to search for burial place of Sultan Alp Arslan

Turkey and Turkmenistan decided to organize a joint archaeological expedition to search for a burial place of the legendary Alp Arslan, second Great Seljuk Sultan, who, according to historical sources, was buried next to his farther Sultan Chagrylbek”s grave in Merv in the territory of Turkmenistan. The agreement to this effect was made during the visit to Ashgabat by Turkey”s minister of culture and tourism Ismet Yilmaz. He led a governmental delegation.

“Turkmen-Turkish cooperation is based on what we call “two states – one nation”. All our proposals were accepted with understanding in Turkmenistan, and we are looking forward to their soonest implementation. Today, armed with historical knowledge, advanced technologies, special equipment, we expect to reach this goal together with our Turkmen colleagues,” he said.

The guests held meetings and talks in various ministries and organizations of Turkmenistan, including the ministry of culture, TV and Radio broadcasting, and viewed the sights of Ashgabat and its suburbs and visited Mary province.
