Tajikistan reaps rich harvest, doubles farm produce exports

Over the first nine months of this year, Tajikistan has produced about one and a half million tons of vegetables and melons and gourds, and the grain harvest also approached the mark of one million tons, says the press center of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

As of October 1, all categories of farms have reportedly produced about 935,000 tons of cereals, including 715,500 tons of wheat.  This year, an average wheat yield has been 3.4 tons per hectare.

This year, farmers have planted cereals on a total area 304,700 hectares, and to-date, they have reaped cereal crops from 296,000 hectares.

Besides, all categories of farms have produced 563,000 tons of potatoes, about 1.2 million tons of vegetables, including 526,000 tons of onions, 247,000 tons of tomatoes, 123,000 of carrots, and 120,000 of cucumbers, over the reporting period.

Over the same nine-month period, Tajik farmers produced 571,000 tons of melons and gourds, 212,000 tons of fruits and 122,000 tons of grapes.

Some of Tajikistan’s agricultural products are exported.

According to data from the Export Development Agency under the Government of Tajikistan, Tajikistan has exported US$40.12 million worth of farm produce over the first nine months of this year, which is US$20 million or 99.3 percent more than in the same period last year.

Major trading partners for Tajikistan’s farm produce exports are the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It is to be noted that Tajikistan plans to double or triple farm produce exports to Russia’s Sverdlovsk oblast in 2023.  A delegation of the Export Development Agency visited Yekaterinburg in August.

Deputy Head of the Consultative Council at the General Consulate of Tajikistan in Yekaterinburg, Yaqubjon Umarov, told TASS at the time Tajikistan is interested in increasing farm produce exports to the Sverdlovsk oblast and Tajikistan’s Khatlon province is ready to sign a cooperation agreement with it.

“For the purpose of increasing turnover a special refrigerated hangar is being built in Tajikistan,” said Umarov.  “Refrigerators are needed so that the crop does not spoil, and from there it would be sent here [Sverdlovsk oblast].”
