ITC teaches modern patternmaking to Tajik fashion and clothing professionals

Some 50 experts in the field of fashion and sewing from Tajik educational institutions and clothing companies have successfully completed an intensive tailoring course featuring the most modern design technologies and innovative trends on designing men’s suits, according to the International Trade Center (ITC) Office in Tajikistan.

This tailoring-centric program was made possible thanks to the Government of Switzerland through the ITC’s Global Textiles and Clothing Program (GTEX).

Dushanbe and Khujand reportedly hosted the intensive course delivered by Ms. Irina Filichkina, ITC expert and an official representative of the German patternmaking school “M.Müller & Sohn” in the Russian Federation.

The training course covered both theory and practical knowledge in pattern drafting, garment construction, and dressmaking.  The participants learned to adapt a basic pattern while developing various types of men’s suits.  Through hands-on experiences, the participants furthered their knowledge in constructing the design of men’s suits on different dimensional characteristics and learned more about the sewing techniques involved in developing this type of product.

Participants to the training were reportedly equipped with necessary skills such as taking body measurements and fitting adjustments for dresses.  The class was guided through each step of the construction processes, including the sewing technique on corners, curves, lining and garment finishing.

Trainer Irina Filichkina says: “The knowledge gained through the training will help participants modernize the process of clothing patternmaking that can be applied to mass and individual production.”

The sessions were conducted using a mix of hands-on activities, demonstrations, and lectures in order to convey learning concepts in a multifaceted approach.

The course provided a unique opportunity for participants to develop their practical skills and creative methods for designing and sewing clothes, thereby allowing for the further transfer of knowledge and skills gained to their colleagues.

Jahonoro Usmonova, a teacher from the Technological University of Tajikistan and a graduate of the patternmaking course, said: “Garment construction is the key in fashion designing and patternmaking and garment construction are crucial in it.  This training played an important role for us in understanding the garment from all aspects in order to perform better pattern making.”

At the end of the course, successful graduates received certificates of completion.

The GTEX MENATEX program is funded by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Swiss Confederation focusing on five priority countries (Egypt, Morocco, Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan and Tunisia).

The program reportedly aims to encourage exports of textiles and clothing from developing countries to promote employment and income generation throughout the value chain.

This year the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan marks 30th year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Tajikistan.  Over the last 30 years, around 500 million USD have been allocated in the form of grants to the Government of Tajikistan and the Tajik population.  Within its Cooperation program for Central Asia (2022-2025), Switzerland will focus on supporting economic, social, and democratic development, promoting an integrated and regional approach in the complex field of transboundary water management, strengthening economic ties and promoting good governance.
