Russia provides humanitarian aid to tremor-affected areas in southern Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, September 7, Asia-Plus – A bulk of humanitarian aid provided by Russia’s Emergencies Ministry will be airlifted in the Dushanbe airport today afternoon.

According to information from the Tajik Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), the humanitarian aid including relief items is intended for families, affected by the earthquake in the Qumsangir district in southern Tajikistan.  A source in the MES says the assistance includes 155 tens, blankets and other relief supplies.

This aid is in time to the people of Qumsangir, who are trying to rebuild their homes after the July 29 earthquake, which completely destroyed or partially damaged over 2,000 residential buildings in the region.

We will recall that three children were killed and 20 people were injured by the July 29 tremors.  The MES said the quake caused damage worth more than 60 million Somonis, completely destroyed 971 residential and administrative buildings and partially damaged 1,441 buildings in the Qumsangir district.  Some 2,000 people were left homeless.   Tajik authorities appealed for internal aid.
