Torrential rain causes mudslides in northern Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, July 24, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Heavy rainfalls have caused mudslides in some districts of the northern Sughd province.

Colonel Muzaffar Usmonov, an official with the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), told Asia-Plus today that torrential rain on July 21 caused mudslides in the villages of Yuipchoq and Shohqadam Sughd’s Bobojonghfurov district.

One residential building, two water pipelines and 5 kilometers of road were damaged by the mudslides.

The mudslides also killed 100 head of sheep and goats and five head of cattle as well as affected several hectares of farmland and river bank protection works, the emergencies official said.

Local emergency services in cooperation with the district authorities are carrying out rehabilitation work in the mudslide sites, Usmonov said.
