68 households in the village of Shujand in the Rushan district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) have been evacuated to a local school due to the risk of flooding.
Torrential rain on August 24-25 mudflows that flooded two households houses and damaged ancillary buildings, household plots and farmlands in the village, according to the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan.
Umeda Yusufi, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Committee, says the mudflows also blocked the canal of the local small hydropower plant.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, according to her.
“In this regard, to avoid human losses 68 households (totaling 124 people) were evacuated to School No 10 and houses of their relatives. Special vehicles were mobilized to the scene and work was carried out to eliminate the consequences of the disaster,” Ms. Yusufi said.
“Today, people have already returned to their homes,” the Emergencies Committee spokeswoman told Asia-Plus Friday (August 26) afternoon.
A special commission is currently working at the scene to estimate the actual damage caused to the village.
