Dushanbe prosecutor to toughen efforts against non-registration of crimes

DUSHANBE, January 17, Asia-Plus — Last year, 36 deliberated killings were reported in Dushanbe; of them, 37 were solved, Dushanbe Prosecutor Qurbonali Muhabbatov said in an exclusive interview with Asia-Plus, citing official data.

“According to statistical data, more than 3,146 crimes were reported in the Tajik capital in 2006, which is 1.8 percent fewer than in 2005,” the Dushanbe prosecutor said, noting that official figures also show that the number of thefts and robberies reported decreased considerably.

“I don’t agree with statistical data; I believe that actual number of crimes committed in Dushanbe last year is higher than official figures show because some crimes are not registered,” Muhabbatov noted, adding that “the registration discipline” has been tightened this year.  “Thus, over the first 15 days of January, 208 crimes have been registered in Dushanbe, which is 103 crimes more than in the same period of last year,” the prosecutor said.  Over the same 15-day period, three criminal groupings engaged in thefts from apartment and shops have been discovered, according to him.  “These groups have committed dozens of crimes over the past year.”

The prosecutor stressed that he will continue taking efforts to ensure that all crimes committed in the city are registered in future as well.  “It is a very serious issue; no crime should remain out of registration in order to provide the constitutional principle of inevitability of punishment for the crimes committed,” Muhabbatov said.
