Tajikistan reports large precursor haul

DUSHANBE, November 26, Asia-Plus  — Officers from the Sughd counternarcotics directorate have detained alleged smuggler in Sughd’s Konibodom district and confiscated 1,854 kilograms of sulfuric acid, Asia-Plus has learned at the Tajik Drug Control Agency (DCA).

The source at a DCA said that 50 cans containing totaling 1,854 kilograms of sulfuric acid were in a house  of a local resident at the end of last week.

“Although the sulfuric acid is not used directly in production of heroin, but it is put on the list of precursors, which are used for production of other narcotics, including cocaine,” the source said, adding that 1,854 kilograms of sulfuric acid had been smuggled into the province from Uzbekistan and it was intended for fueling storage batteries.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted on smuggling charge and an investigation is under way.
