Tajik prosecutor-general’s office applies to Interpol for help arresting Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev

DUSHANBE, April 24, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan’s Prosecutor-General’s Office has applied to Interpol for help arresting mutinous Colonel Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev.

A source at the Tajik Prosecutor-General’s Office said that representatives of Interpol had asked to translate the submitted documents into Russia and Arabic languages.  The documents have already been translated and sent to Interpol, according to him.

A case of Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev has been investigated by the Prosecutor-General’s Office, and it cannot be ruled out that Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev is currently based in Uzbekistan, the source said.

Colonel Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev masterminded two coup attempts in the 1990s.  The rebellious colonel staged an abortive coup attempt in August 1997.  Besides, more than 100 people had been killed in less than a week, after Khudoiberdiyev seized much of Khujand and the surrounding area in the Sughd province in November 1998.
