UNDP administrator visits Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, May 19, 2011, Asia-Plus  — The UNDP Administrator, Ms. Helen Clark, is arriving in Dushanbe on May 20 for a two-day visit, according to the UNDP CO Tajikistan.

The main purpose of the visit is for the UNDP Administrator to discuss achievements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with President Emomali Rahmon.

During her stay in Tajikistan, Ms. Clark is also scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi, officers of the UN Agencies active in Tajikistan and representatives of other international organizations, NGOs and donor agencies operating in Tajikistan.

The UNDP Administrator will also visit Vahdat district to review the UNDP projects being implemented in the district.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations’ global development network.  It advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.  UNDP operates in 166 countries, working with nations on their own solutions to global and national development challenges.

The UNDP Administrator is appointed by the Secretary-General and confirmed by the General Assembly for a term of four years.

Helen Clark became the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme on April 17, 2009, and is the first woman to lead the organization.  She is also the Chair of the United Nations Development Group, a committee consisting of the heads of all UN funds, programs and departments working on development issues.

Prior to her appointment with UNDP, Helen Clark served for nine years as Prime Minister of New Zealand, serving three successive terms from 1999 – 2008.  Throughout her tenure as Prime Minister, Helen Clark engaged widely in policy development and advocacy across the international, economic, social and cultural spheres.
