Rahmonov leaves for Minsk to attend CIS summit

DUSHANBE, November 27, Asia-Plus – President Emomali Rahmonov today is leaving for the Belarus capital city of Minsk to attend a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) set for November 28, presidential press service reported.

The CIS presidents are expected to discuss about 30 topics, including the improvement of the activity of the Commonwealth of Independent State and its prospects.  Most of the CIS heads of state have declared the intention to attend the summit.  The CIS reform will be the major topic on the agenda of the organization’s Minsk summit.

During his staying in Minsk, Rahmonov will hold a number of bilateral meetings with his CIS counterparts.

CIS foreign ministers are holding a meeting in Minsk today to discuss the summit’s agenda.

In the meantime, some Russian experts consider that the Minsk summit will be difficult and contradictory, because the organization, set up on the ruins of the Soviet Union in 1991, has almost exhausted its potential for progressive development. According to them, the CIS will hardly live to celebrate its 20th anniversary, which could be for the better, “because divorced couples feel better if they do not meet too often in the same kitchen.”
