Another alleged Hizb ut-Tahrir activist detained in northern Tajikistan

KHUJAND, January 26, 2011, Asia-Plus — Another alleged activist of the outlawed extremist religious Hizb ut-Tahrir organization has been arrested in Sughd province.

According to the Sughd police directorate, the 41-year-old resident of Bobojonghafurov district Abdujalil Yusupov was detained on suspicion of active membership in Hizb ut-Tahrir on January 24.

The source says Yusupov was convicted in 2000 of inciting strife along national and religious lines and calling for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order in Tajikistan.

“Abdujalil Yusupov joined the banned extremist organization in 1998; he swore an oath in Tashkent, Uzbekistan,” noted the source, “On return home, he began propagating ideas of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Bobojonghafurov district and recruiting local residents into the organization.”

This time, criminal proceedings have been instituted against Abdujalil Yusupov under the provisions of Article 307 (2) of Tajikistan’s Penal Code – organizing an extremist group.

The Tajik government banned the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in 2001.
