Tajik government receives help from IMF and other donors for mitigation of crisis effects

DUSHANBE, September 25, 2009, Asia-Plus  — No matter where the global crisis began, first of all each government is responsible for economy of its country, Mr. Axel Schimellpfennig, the head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) mission to Tajikistan, remarked at press conference in Dushanbe on September 24 commenting on a statement delivered by President Emomali Rahmon in general debates of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.

We will recall that delivering the statement in general debates of the 64th UN General Assembly, President Rahmon said on September 23 that it is known that the global financial and economic crisis was primarily caused by the most advanced and wealthy countries that unreasonably inflated banking assets at the expense of unsecured loans.  “Therefore, we believe that these countries must bear its share of responsibility towards the developing countries, whose rather difficult situation was even more aggravated by the global financial crisis.  Partial writing off the debts incurred during the crisis, consistent increase in donor assistance, and rational use of labor migration could be very helpful in such situation.”

Mr. Schimellpfennig noted that Tajikistan had already had an opportunity to use the debt restructuring mechanism.  “Such an opportunity was given by international community.”

According to him, Tajikistan is receiving support from the IMF and other donors for mitigation of effects of the global financial and economic crisis.

“During this year, donors have provided considerable assistance to support Tajikistan’s budget, the IMF has provided resources to support balance of payments,” said the IMF official.  “At present it is high time to think about 2010 and work out the necessary complex of measures to promote the resumption of sustainable economic growth.”
