CA heads of state must adopt decision on free movement of commodities, say Tajik expert

DUSHANBE, December 1, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Effects of the global financial and economic crisis on the economies of Central Asia’s region could be mitigated if the Central Asian heads of state adopt a decision on free movement of commodities in the region, Dr. Hojimuhammad Umarov, an expert on the Tajik economy, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, this measure is able to promote expansion of the solvent demand scales, becoming a benchmark for the regional economic recovery.

“The decision on free movement of commodities at a regional scale will extend export opportunities of the region’s countries,” said Dr. Umarov, “Those commodities and services that cannot be realized at the word market may be realized at the regional level.  For example, fruits, vegetables, watermelons, melons and gourds as well as canned fruits and vegetables.”

For this, it is necessary to remove all obstacles on the way of movement of commodities, the expert noted.
