DPT proposes to give the title of Hero of Tajikistan to Qadriddin Aslonov

DUSHANBE, July 11, 2011, Asia-Plus  — The Democratic Party of Tajikistan (DPT) has applied to the president, proposing to give the title of Hero of Tajikistan posthumously to Qadriddin Aslonov, former chairman of the Supreme Council (former Tajikistan’s parliament).

DPT leader Masoud Sobirov says the party lodged an appropriate appeal to the head of state on July 10.

“Tajikistan marks the 20th anniversary of its Independence on September 9 this year,” noted Sobirov.  “It is good that over the past twenty years, our prominent fellow countrymen such as Sadriddin Ayni, Mirzo Tursunzoda, Bobojon Ghafurov, Shirinsho Shotemour, Nusratulo Maqsoum and Emomali Rahmon have bee given the title of Hero of Tajikistan.  Qadriddin Aslonov, who signed the Declaration on the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan on September 9, 1991, is also worthy of the title of Hero of Tajikistan.”

He noted that DPT has called on other political parties and public associations of the country to support their proposal.

In the meantime, representative of the Communist of Party of Tajikistan (CPT) Ismoil Talbakov considers that Aslonov is no worthy of the title of Hero of Tajikistan.  “I consider that this proposal is one more intrigue of the DPT on the threshold of the 20th anniversary of Tajikistan,” he noted.

Usmon Solehov, head of the public relations department of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), considers that it is still premature to speak about giving the title of Hero of Tajikistan to Qadriddin Aslonov because an official legal assessment of activities of Aslonov as Chairman of the Supreme Council has not yet been given.

Leader of the Social-Democratic Party (SDP) Rahmatillo Zoirov, for his part, noted that Aslonov’s services for the country had not been so great.  “It is very difficult to assess activity of Qadriddin Aslonov definitely.  He made a lot of mistakes and showed himself inactive and poor-spirited man.  He frequently changed his decisions.”

Deputy leader of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP), Umarali Hisainov, refrained from commenting on that issue.  “We will discuss DPT’s proposal at a meeting of the political council of our party,” he noted.

Qadriddin Aslonov (1947-1992), was acting President of Tajikistan between August 31 and September 23, 1991.  When his predecessor Qahhor Mahkamov resigned on August 29, 191 as the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the republic due to his open support for the August coup attempt, Aslonov was elected his temporary successor in the capacity as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet.

Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan declared independence on September 9, 1991.  One of Aslonov”s first actions as leader was to sign an edict calling for the cessation of all activities of the Communist Party on the territory of Tajikistan and the nationalization of the party”s property on September 21, 1991.  The Congress of the Communist Party of Tajikistan subsequently convened in the second half of September 1991 to announce the dissolution of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

On September 23, conservative forces in the Tajik government ousted Aslonov.  First Communist Party Secretary Rahmon Nabiyev was installed as president.

Qadriddin Aslonov was reported missing in November 1992.  According to some source, hews killed by militants of the pro-government Popular Front.
