Three schoolgirls commit suicide in Sughd province

KHUJAND, August 30, Asia-Plus  — Three schoolgirls committed suicide in the northern Sughd province on August 29.

N.Sh., a ninth-grade student at high school in the village of Gazantarak, Ghonchi district committed suicide last Monday by self-hanging, said the source at the Sughd police directorate.

Besides, two eleventh-grade students from the Vorukh Jamoat in Isfara district and the Shodoba Jamoat in Asht district committed suicide on the same day.

In the Shodoba jamoat, the schoolgirl reportedly committed suicide following family quarrel and the causes of the suicides in Ghonchi and Isfara districts are still under investigation.

The Sughd police directorate reports 141 suicide cases have been reported in northern Tajikistan over the first seven months of this year, which is 66 cases fewer than in the same period last year.

The suicide situation is very serious in Sughd province and local experts say those committing suicide are mainly motivated by economic and family problems.
