Two more peaks renamed in the Pamirs

Two more peaks have been renamed in the Pamirs, Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).  They have got names of known Tajik poets.

Mayakovsky Peak has been renamed Mirsaid Mirshakar and Peak Oktyabrsky has been renamed Mumin Qanoat.

The tenth session of the GBAO regional legislature (Majlis) of the sixth convocation took place GBAO’s capital, Khorog, on June 30 and the legislature members unanimously voted for renaming the peaks.

Mayakovsky Peak (elevation 6,096 meters) is located in the extreme south-west corner of GBAO (Ishkashim district), where the north–south Ishkashim Range joins the east–west Shakhdara Range.  Discovered in the early 1930s by Soviet explorer Pavel Luknitsky, who gave it a figurative name, Three-Headed Peak.  After the first ascent by Soviet alpinists in 1947, the peak was renamed in honor of the Soviet Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930). The 1947 Soviet expedition was led by V. Budenov.

Oktyabrsky Peak (elevation 6,780 meters) is the highest summit of the Zulumart Ridge, located in the east of the Pamirs; it is adjoining the Zaalai Range in the north. By elevation Oktaybrsky Peak is 15th out of 388 peaks in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region.  After the ascent by a group of Soviet and Chinese alpinists in 1955, the peak was named Oktyabrsky.  The expedition was led by Ye. Beletsky.
