DUSHANBE, April 18, 2013, Asia-Plus — The regional debate tournament entitled “FREE MARKET CUP – Khatlon 2013” will take place in Qurghon Teppa, the capital of Khatlon province from April 21-22.
Dedicated exclusively to economic concepts and issues such as taxation, state economic regulation and international trade, the event has been made possible by partnership with and under financial support of the Branch Office of Open Society Institute/Assistance Foundation in Tajikistan (OSI/AF-Tajikistan), the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Foundation for Economic Research “Atlas”.
According to OSI/AF-Tajikistan, the aim of the tournament is to improve economic literacy for young people through debate on specialized economic topics. Tournament participants are young teams from Khatlon province. The tournament is based on an American parliamentary format.
Youth debates are one of the effective methods of informal education and are organized to help young people gain the knowledge and skills required to be part of modern democratic society. They are aimed at enriching the education and developing critical thinking and public speaking skills.
A distinctive feature of debate is high degree of self-study and self-organization. According to this principle the foremost purpose of the tournament “FREE MARKET CUP – Khatlon 2013” is to improve economic literacy for young leaders and build an intellectual youth platform for expression of ideas. Thus the participants will have an opportunity to attend one day training on debate format, technique and economic issues analysis prior to the tournament.
